Montiggl – Sigmundskron | W105
A detour to Reinhold Messner?
Your hike starts at the large Montiggler See lake in Eppan. The warm bathing lake is especially popular with walkers and bikers, as countless paths lead around it. First you hike along the left shore of the large Montiggl Lake and then bypass the small Montiggl Lake on the right shore.
Your first destination is the “Wild Man”, a porphyry hill located in the middle of the Monitggler forest. Around the wild man there are some legends and myths that you can discover. You will be greeted by some stoanerne Mandln (stone men), which have been built here by hikers.
Continue towards Schreckbichel, a vineyard landscape in Girlan known for its good wine. Out of the forest in the midst of apple meadows and vineyards. You walk past the Marklhof farm and follow trail no. 1 in the direction of Firmian / Sigmundskron. The trail leads you again through the forest to Sigmundskron Castle, which was converted into the Messner Mountain Museum by South Tyrolean mountaineer Reinhold Messner. The museum is definitely worth a visit. The theme: the confrontation between mountain and man.
You go down the mountain to the village of Frangart and then follow the trail no. 2 that leads you through the forest and vineyards back to Girlan. From there you continue through vineyards in the direction of the Montiggl lakes.
