Penegal & Furglauer gorge | W122
Through walls of stone
For this breath-taking and particularly demanding hike, a pair of sturdy shoes is an absolute must. You take the Mendel cable car from St. Anton in Kaltern up to the Mendel Pass. Directly from the Mendel Pass you hike on trail no. 500 in the direction of the Penegal. The Penegal offers an impressive panorama in the direction of Überetsch, Unterland (area South of Bozen) but also of the Dolomites. And in the back the panorama of the Brenta Dolomites.
After a short rest, continue along the well-marked trail no. 500 in the direction of the Furglauer gorge. At the crossroads, descend to the right via a steep climb on trail no. 540. Surefootedness is required here! After the intersection with the Eppaner Höhenweg, continue to descend to Gasthof Steinegger. A rest on the terrace is now just the right thing, along with a refreshing drink.
Continue west along nature trail 7a ( which then becomes hiking trail no. 15) to the ice holes. Ideal for cooling off, because the rock holes transport the cold fall winds like an air conditioner into ground depressions at the foot of the Mendel.
Via Oberplanitzing you continue in the direction of Kaltern and turn left at the Sinn Estate into wine trail no. 15. Via Kaltern Klavenz you reach the village center of Kaltern.
Very demanding and varied hike from the heights to the depths
Breathtaking view on the Penegal and 360° view
Ideal to escape from the summer heat
